Green Woodworking Furniture

As well as teaching green woodworking courses, I am also developing a range of green woodworking furniture and products.

Please contact me to discuss this aspect of my work, and any specific projects you may have
in mind.

The Wishbone Stool

My 'Wishbone Stool' kitchen bar stool is hand-made to order, with each one signed and numbered. I have designed it in response to a brief to produce a stool in the greenest way possible.

Each stool is made entirely by hand from a single freshly cut Ash log. I personally source the timber locally, from a sustainably managed woodland. Whenever feasible, it is extracted by horse. The craft techniques I employ are ancient and labour intensive, using axes, froes, pole lathes, drawknives, shaving horses and spokeshaves. The result is that I hand-craft each individual component to the greatest extent possible, carefully following each piece of grain to achieve both the maximum strength and the most satisfying aesthetic effect.

The Wishbone Stool uses natural shrinkage when seasoning to lock the joints, the time-proven technique used in the traditional construction of Windsor chairs. I don't use any glue, and no screws or nails are necessary.

I finish each stool using soap, an environmentally sound treatment that, literally, washes out the grain. After several treatments the stool is ready for use. Over time the wood will build-up a patina and any dirty marks can be cleaned with soap again.

The seat is oak-bark tanned leather from my local tannery, with a horse hair cushion within. The seat can be removed when the stool is being cleaned, using the buckle system underneath.

Delivery times vary so please call or email me to confirm the timing for your personal requirement. The retail price is £2280.85 plus VAT (£2622.98 inc VAT), and terms are 30% deposit on order with the balance on completion.
